How to detect a fake Facebook profile
Are random strangers requesting to be friends on Facebook? Perhaps you don’t remember them too well because you only met up once or twice. Use the following tips to find out whether a Facebook profile is real or fake.
#1 Check their network
If they are in a legitimate network (e.g. company or school) then that normally indicates that a Facebook profile is really. You can only join a company or school network if you are able to confirm your identity through your organization’s email address. For example, if you attend New York University then you must have an email that ends with @nyu.edu.
#2 Check your mutual friends
Chances are, if you have a few mutual friends then you may have bumped into this person a few times in the past. You can also your mutual friends if they know the person well.
#3 Check their wall
Accept their request for a few minutes and scour through their wall. If it is filled with spam then remove them immediately.
#4 Celebrity?
Why on earth would a celebrity want to add you on Facebook? Ignore a celebrity request immediately. Those accounts are used for data mining and promotion purposes.
